And if theres one wrong answer to that question, its Nope, none at all. See, an interview is basically a conversation. Its an opportunity for employers to get to know you, and it works the other way around too. When you ask questions that are thoughtful, surprising and show genuine interest in them, employers are more likely to want to get you on board. After all, you wouldnt want to get on board with a company that interviews you with generic, uninspired questions, would you? So, if you want to stand out from other applicants, heres how to interview your interviewer. How does the company measure success in this particular role? By asking about metrics right off the bat, you show that youre goal-oriented, and unafraid to be accountable for the work you do. Also, the answer will tell you whether your ideas about success match up with the companys. Still, if you can read between the lines, their answers can be pretty telling. If they say something like No, this company has no cons at all, its better to take that with a grain of salt. After all, even Fortune 500 companies have their cons. If I get this job, how can I help you address your most pressing needs? According to the experts at Farr, this is the best question you can ask at an interview, because it shows that youre concerned about the company beyond the perks and benefits they offer. It also saves you the effort of figuring out what goals, tasks and projects to prioritize once you hit the ground running. What is the companys customer service philosophy? Its one thing to read about it on the companys website, and another to hear it straight from an actual employee. If an interviewer can clearly explain what their customer service philosophy is all about, and give specifics on how its practiced in the companys day-to-day operations, you can assume that their company has the integrity to walk the talk. How does this role contribute to fulfilling company goals? From an interviewers point of view, this is a refreshing question, because it suggests that youre interested in more than paychecks and punched clocks. If you understand that your role is important no matter how small it seems, youre more likely to go above the bare minimum in your day-to-day work. Is this a good place for someone with a growth mindset? According to Inc.com, this is the one tough question you must ask in any interview. While its debatable if its the question thatll singlehandedly land you the job, its still worth asking for a couple of reasons. First, like the previous question, it tells an interviewer that youre serious about becoming more than an average employee. After all, people with growth mindsets always ask themselves What can I do today so I can be better tomorrow? Second, it helps you get a feel for the companys culture. If it encourages employees to go beyond their job descriptions, or even rock the boat when necessary, youll know theres unlimited potential for growth within that company. If it doesnt, thats still okay â" but only if you have a so-called fixed mindset. Do you have any questions or concerns about my qualifications? Understandably, interviewers wont be forthright about what they think of you during the interview proper. Theyll probably raise an eyebrow at what you say, or follow up your answers with impromptu questions, but otherwise theyll keep their expressions neutral. Thats why its important that you ask this question. Not only will it reveal areas of improvement that youll want to work on for future interviews, but it also indicates that youre open to feedback. Plus, as difficult as it is to receive constructive criticism, employers always appreciate anyone who can do that. Anything Else? These arent the only questions you can ask employers. If its something you cant easily look up on Google, or is essentially indicative of how interested you are in the company and what you can do for them, ask away. To Connect or Not to Connect on LinkedIn LinkedIn has become a main networking location to connect with other job seekers, hiring managers, recruiters, business owners and others you feel will benefit you. But, as with everything, there is a certain protocol or etiquette to connecting and building a business relationship. These rules make sense whether youâre a job seeker, or a business owner looking for a complimentary business partner. Once you have an interview or youâve scheduled a business meeting, it makes sense to look the person or people youâll be interviewing or meeting with on LinkedIn. It also makes sense to view the company profile on LinkedIn. You can never be over-prepared. Following up an interview/meeting When your interview or meeting is over, follow-up is important. But how you follow-up will make the difference between a potential next interview and being offered the job, or for a business owner, whether youâll be forging a business relationship. In addition to a follow-up phone call or email, you might be inclined to connect through LinkedIn. Letâs say youâve exchanged business cards. I wouldnât make the assumption you can connect with that person unless they specifically have you given you permission to do so. But thatâs my opinion as a small business owner. I wanted to find out how some of my connections on LinkedIn felt. One of my recruiting contacts told me connecting right away wasnât a good idea. A candidate of theirs sent a LinkedIn request to connect within an hour after the initial interview. The client called the recruiter and said they couldnt put a finger exactly on why, but it made them uncomfortable and they ruled the candidate out because of that connection request. That request probably came across as too informal and/or pushy. Another recruiting contact said that it was okay to connect after a decision had been made on who was being hired for the specific opportunity even if the job seeker wasnât the one hired. That way the job seeker could be kept in mind for future opportunities and could also serve as a referral to others they might know of for other opportunities. I usually gauge whether to connect based on how the interview goes. If I feel Iâve developed a good rapport with the person, Iâll ask about connecting with that person and others at the company. You should definitely ask during the interview or interviews whether it would be ok to connect on LinkedIn. Your decision could also depend on the company culture. Imagine two different situations: One candidate being upfront about connecting on LinkedIn and was very practical/professional/objective about it with the hiring manager. One candidate who never mentioned about connecting on LinkedIn and then suddenly sent an Invite to the hiring manager on LinkedIn after the interview. If you are the hiring manager who encountered the above candidates, which one would give you a better impression of professionalism? Integrity? Or character? I see LinkedIn as a means to connect with others with like careers, business interests, etc. Its a professional networking tool. Youve just met with and divulged a large amount of information about yourself and your company to a prospective client, hiring manager or business owner so theyre not really a stranger. And the whole point is that youve just met with someone in the same industry you are interested in. That person can always ignore or decline the invitation. They have more to base that decision on after youve just spent time telling them all about yourself. Theres a fine line between pushy and taking initiative in a tough market. Personalization No matter you decide to do, personalize your connection request â" thanking them for their time and mentioning why youâd want to connect. That way you differentiate yourself from others. Never, never use the generic âIâd like to add you to my professional networkâ message. Add something like: It was nice meeting you to discuss the job opportunity at (insert company). I know Iâd be a great âfitâ for the company (fill in) Once you connect, your work isnât done. Make sure to send your new connection a message through LinkedIn thanking them for connecting and reminding them about your skills. An example: Thanks again for accepting my connection request and for meeting with me. Let me know if thereâs anything else you need from me.
